I was sitting on the bed next to my husband as he was finishing up his daily blood pressure check. On a whim, I decided to check mine.

I didn’t expect anything unusual. Even though my weight itself has always been up and down, my actual numbers - blood pressure, blood sugar, etc - had always been perfect. But this time, when the numbers popped up, my blood pressure was high. Very high.

Suddenly, I was on the same health track that caused my husband’s stroke 2 years before, leaving him partially disabled.

Having been brought up in what I call ‘toxic entrepreneurship’, my initial reaction was to ignore it until I hit the next milestone in my business. I was in ‘hustle mode’, and stopping the hustle to deal with this was gonna put me behind. I’ll just wait until after I finish this run to deal with this blood pressure thing.

But, another thought quickly popped into my head. My husband’s stroke was largely a byproduct of how long his blood pressure had been high. It had probably been a year since my last healthy blood pressure reading, so I had no idea how long mine had been.

1 month? 3 months? 6 months? The entire year?

What if while waiting until after the next business milestone to deal with this, I end up having some major health complication because of it, and now my son has 2 disabled parents - when I could have prevented it from happening? Nah. Can’t let that happen.

The very next day, I got rid of everything non-essential in my life and started an intense regimen of fasting and walking 10 miles a day.

Within 90 days, I’d lost 70 pounds, and my blood pressure was back in a healthy range.

More importantly, I realized just how close I’d come to overlooking a threat that could’ve derailed everything I was ‘hustling’ for. Made me wonder, where else in my life was I putting things off until “the right time”, with possibly disastrous consequences?
