It started with an avocado… and ended with 21 booked calls

The self-service checkout at the grocery store beeped angrily as Alex attempted to scan her items.

Despite following the on-screen instructions precisely, the machine refused to recognize her avocados.

She tried again with the same result, growing increasingly frustrated as the line behind her grew.

"Need some help?" asked a store employee who noticed her struggling.

"Yes, please," Alex replied, embarrassed. "I can't get it to scan these avocados."

The employee nodded with understanding. "These machines can be tricky. Let me show you."

Instead of simply taking over, the employee guided Alex through the process:

  • "First, acknowledge what the system is asking for by pressing this button," she explained.

  • "Then, connect your item to the right category here.”

  • “Finally, trigger the weight sensor by placing them in this area."

Following these steps, the avocados scanned perfectly. The employee stayed for a moment to ensure Alex could handle the rest of her items, then moved on to help another customer.

As Alex finished checking out, she reflected on how effectively the employee had assisted her.

Rather than simply fixing the problem, she had given a simple, repeatable system that Alex could use every time she bought produce. The process had 3 clear steps: acknowledge the system prompt, connect the item to the right category, and trigger the appropriate response needed to move on to the next item.

Back in her apartment, as Alex opened her Instagram DMs to respond to messages from her last 2-step drop, the grocery store interaction replayed in her mind.

She realized her conversations often stalled because she lacked a simple, repeatable structure for moving them forward toward booking a sales call for her coaching program:

  • Sometimes she responded with lengthy paragraphs of advice.

  • Other times she asked numerous questions that felt more like an interrogation than a conversation.

  • Occasionally she suggested a call immediately, before building any real rapport.

Her approach varied with each conversation, resulting in inconsistent outcomes for leading qualified leads in her DMs to booked sales calls.

What if, like the helpful grocery store lady, she could develop a simple framework for every message response?

From Checkout to Check-ins

This realization led Alex to my ACT Method, a straightforward approach to DM messages that consistently moved prospects from initial engagement to booked calls for her coaching program.

The ACT Method consists of 3 dead-simple steps that transform DM conversations into purposeful exchanges:

  • Acknowledge - Validate the specific comment, question, or challenge the prospect has shared about reaching their goals (initially identified by the resource they’ve requested, in some cases)

  • Connect - Relate to them in some way… i.e. elaborate on the problem they mention, provide a quick tip for solving it, give them props for anything they've done well so far etc

  • Trigger - Ask a question that moves the conversation toward your desired conversion action (book a call, register for a webinar, buy a product etc)

Before implementing the ACT Method, Alex's conversations typically followed this pattern:

Prospect: "Loved your content about authentic marketing. I've been struggling with creating content that feels true to me but still converts."

Alex: "Thank you so much! That's such a common challenge. Authentic marketing is all about finding the intersection between what you're passionate about and what your audience needs. Have you tried doing market research to identify the specific pain points your ideal clients experience? Or perhaps creating content pillars that align with both your expertise and their challenges? I also recommend focusing on storytelling frameworks that allow you to share your personality while still delivering valuable insights. Let me know if any of these suggestions resonate with you!"

Prospect: "Thanks for all these ideas!" [Conversation ends]

The 3-Step Scanner

After implementing the ACT Method, her responses started to systematically guide prospects toward booking a sales call.

Prospect: "Loved your authentic marketing guide. I've been struggling with creating content that feels true to me, but still converts."

Alex: "I appreciate you sharing that struggle… finding the balance between authenticity and conversion is something many coaches wrestle with.’ [ACKNOWLEDGE]

This usually indicates a deeper misalignment between how you're naturally communicating and how your ideal clients make decisions. [CONNECT]

Curious, which aspect feels more challenging for you… identifying what makes your approach unique, or translating that into content that resonates with your ideal clients? [TRIGGER]

Prospect: "Definitely the translation part. I know what makes me different, but when I try to communicate it, it either feels too salesy or too vague."

The conversation continued with Alex applying the ACT Method to each response, gradually guiding the prospect toward booking a sales call as the natural extension of the conversation.

My Dead-Simple 6-Step DM Conversation Audit (Complete This Today)

Want to get started transforming your messaging approach? Follow these first steps so we can figure out what’s actually happening in your current DM convos:

STEP 1: Pull all your incoming messages from the past week (month or 3 months if there hasn’t been that many this week)

STEP 2: Group them into 3-5 common categories relevant to you program (e.g., content questions, pricing inquiries, program questions)

STEP 3: For each category, identify the underlying transformation your coaching program provides

STEP 4: Pick the most promising leads and note the typical response pattern you currently use

STEP 5: Identify where you fell short with moving the conversation towards your desired goal (sales call, purchased event registration etc)

STEP 6: Rewrite what you would have said in that exact conversation if you were using the ACT method (you can do this digitally for easy reference, but I recommend doing it with good ‘ol pen and paper as well so your brain can start to quickly see some of the patterns with your best quality leads)

From Frustrated to Flowing

After implementing the ACT Method in her DM conversations, Alex saw immediate improvement in her DM message flow. Response rates increased and convos that had previously stalled after 2-3 exchanges now regularly extended to 7+ meaningful interactions, making the prospects super warm when they finally landed on a call.

Most importantly, her meaningful conversation-to-call conversion rate increased from 7% to 29% within the first two weeks.

The most unexpected benefit wasn't just more calls... it was in her dramatically reduced message management time.

By following a consistent framework rather than reinventing each response, Alex cut her daily messaging time from 6-8+ hours down to just 3-4, while generating better results.

Six months later, Alex found herself back at the same grocery store. As she confidently used the self-checkout without issue, she spotted the helpful employee who had helped her with the avocados.

"You probably don't remember me," Alex said, "but you helped me with these machines a few months ago. Your approach made all the difference."

The employee smiled. "I'm glad it helped. Most people overcomplicate things with the self-checkout machines. Simple steps usually work best to keep the frustration at bay."

Alex couldn't help but agree.

The ACT Method had transformed her coaching business by providing exactly that... a simple framework that created consistent results, without overcomplicating the process.

The difference between coaches who struggle with inconsistent DM funnel conversions and those who regularly book calls for their high-ticket programs isn't complex strategy or clever tactics... it's the implementation of simple, repeatable frameworks that guide conversations toward natural outcomes.

By mastering my ACT Method, you’ll transform your messaging from unpredictable to systematic... without sacrificing the personal connection that makes DM funnels convert better than many other marketing methods.
