Feeling like you need to hit it big right out of the gate? That’s a trap. Building something great doesn’t happen overnight. Just ask Gary Vee, who turned his family’s liquor store into a multi-million dollar wine empire - one Youtube video at a time.

“Legacy is greater than currency.” – Gary Vaynerchuk

The Mistake Most People Make

Most people think scaling a business means going all in, fast. They try to do everything at once: grow an audience, launch multiple offers, run paid ads (going broke in the process having no idea what they’re doing). But that’s not what Gary Vee did. He started small, with a daily wine vlog (Wine Library TV) and (re)built his family’s wine business one video at a time, focusing on consistency over intensity.

The problem with trying to scale too fast? You burn out, spreading yourself too thin. And instead of doing one thing well, you end up doing a bunch of things poorly.

The Snowball Effect of Overcommitting

  • You try to post everywhere, leading you to have no idea what you should double down on and what you should never revisit, because you never get the correct signal from anything you post.

  • You launch offers before you have an audience whose needs you have studied and understand in an out.

  • You lose steam because there’s too much on your plate, giving up because you can't keep up with yourself.

It’s a recipe for frustration at best. Full crippling burnout at worst. You’re constantly busy - but not seeing results. Instead of growing, you’re stuck in the same place, spinning your wheels.

A study by The American Psychological Association found that over 60% of entrepreneurs experience burnout by trying to scale too quickly.

Gary Vee’s Secret: Consistency Over Flash

Gary Vee didn’t try to be an overnight success. He started small, focusing on one core piece of content—daily wine reviews. And he kept going. Day after day, year after year. He built trust, loyalty, and an audience that came back for more, not because of expensive ads, but because of the value he consistently provided.

The Big Impact of Starting Small

  • Loyal Audience. Consistency builds trust, and trust builds a loyal community around you and your brand.

  • Sustainable Growth. Instead of burning out, you grow at a steady pace.

  • Less Stress. By focusing on doing one thing well, you avoid the overwhelm of trying to do everything at once.

  • Clarity. Small wins give you the feedback you need to know when and how to scale up.

The Small Start Framework

  • Step 1: Pick One Channel. Whether it’s a 𝕏, YouTube, or LinkedIn, focus on 1 place where you’ll consistently show up. Sidenote: Consistently does not have to equal daily. It could be once a week, Monday-Friday, or even weekends only.

  • Step 2: Be Consistent. Create and post at least 1 piece of content for each day you scheduled in Step 1. Do this every {period of time you chose} for an entire year - on whatever platform you choose. The key is to show up regularly, even when it feels like no one’s paying attention.

  • Step 3: Add Value. Focus on providing value to your audience, not (just) selling them. While ‘if you build it they will come’ is a myth, inbound leads from those receiving consistent value from your content isn’t. Give them a reason to stick around and want to buy from you, even before you ask for the sale.

  • Step 4: Scale Gradually. Once you’ve built trust and traction, start introducing new platforms, offers, or types of content.
